Spring cleaning in a London home is different to anywhere else. Smaller spaces, harder water, and city pollution mean there are specific things to prioritise. This checklist is written for that reality.
Start Before You Clean: Declutter First
Cleaning around clutter wastes time. Before anything else, go room by room and remove items you no longer need. Donate, recycle, or bin. The less there is to work around, the faster and more thorough the clean will be.
Kitchen
- Empty and wipe inside every cupboard and drawer
- Degrease the oven, hob, and extractor fan thoroughly
- Defrost the freezer and wipe inside the fridge
- Descale the kettle and coffee machine
- Clean the inside of the microwave
- Wipe down the splashback tiles and grout
- Pull appliances out and clean behind and beneath them
Bathroom
- Descale the shower head, taps, and basin
- Scrub tile grout with a grout cleaner or bicarbonate of soda
- Clean behind the toilet and underneath the cistern
- Wipe inside bathroom cabinets
- Wash or replace the bath mat and shower curtain if applicable
- Clean extractor fan grille
Bedrooms
- Wash all bedding including duvets and pillows (or air them)
- Wipe down mattresses and rotate if applicable
- Clear under the bed and vacuum beneath it
- Dust skirting boards, window sills, and top of wardrobes
- Wipe down light switches and door handles
Living Areas
- Dust all shelving, blinds, and window frames
- Vacuum behind and beneath sofa cushions
- Clean windows inside (and outside if accessible)
- Wipe light fittings and ceiling fan blades if applicable
- Deep clean carpets or rugs — vacuum thoroughly or book a carpet clean
